Malaysia: Borneo
Specialities of Sarawak
A 7-day, small group birding tour (or tour extension) to the remote Paya Maga highlands of little-visited Sarawak, focuses on a selection of elusive Bornean endemic birds more readily available here than in neighbouring Sabah.
Our short tour takes us south of Sabah into the little-visited Malaysian state of Sarawak. In the remote Paya Maga highlands we will search for some of the island’s more elusive endemic birds. We start with a visit to the Klias wetlands where we’ll encounter some localised specialities of the protected lowland peat-swamp forests, before climbing into the hills and the rich submontane forests of Ba’kelalan and Paya Maga. Although requiring more effort than the more popular sites in Sabah, our exploration of Sarawak will give us enhanced chances to see some of the more elusive and highly prized Bornean specialities, easier here than elsewhere, as well as a handful of others found exclusively here.
Among others, we’ll look for Hose’s and Whitehead’s Broadbills, Blue-banded and Bornean Banded Pittas, Black Oriole, Diard’s Trogon, Bare-headed Laughingthrush, Malaysian Rail-babbler, Black-throated Wren-Babbler, Crimson-headed, Red-breasted and Crested Partridges, the elusive Bulwer’s Pheasant, Dulit and Bornean Frogmouths, Malaysian Eared Nightjar and Sunda Scops-Owl.
Although it can be a standalone tour, this short itinerary is ideal for linking with Malaysia – Borneo: Rainforest Endemics of Sabah, creating a longer itinerary that comprehensively covers the avian endemics of Borneo, and complementing that tour with some new birds and experiences.
